Fast-tracking a bio-based product while saving research costs

An R&D team needed to create a new bio-based monomer with specific properties (molecular weight, viscosity, and color) and with purity of 99.99%. However, as the first in the world to work on this type of project, they were working in uncharted territory.
The Case Study: “Outperforming the competition with bio-based chemicals” introduces us to the research team at a large global diversified chemical company. They needed to develop the new monomer from sustainable bio-feedstock so that they could, in turn, use that to create a commercially successful new polymer.
Instead of heading straight into the lab, the team started with ScienceDirect, searching for chemical, process and analytical solutions across a wide range of disciplines such as biology, biotechnology, molecular science, and bio-engineering. Their research was successful in identifying a “green” manufacturing process and a polymerization process that was not only related to their needs but that could also be performed using the company’s existing manufacturing facilities. With no need for a new manufacturing line had to be built, the team saved their company $200 million.
Saving their company money was just one of the benefits, however. They also shaved years off the development time. With the knowledge they gained from ScienceDirect, the team was able to develop the new monomer purification and polymerizations processes in parallel. As a result, the product line was able to quickly launch in the ultra-competitive “green” products market and went on to generate more than half a billion dollars in revenue per year.
