Creating Your EHS Road Map
Posted on May 6th, 2016 by Regina Javier in Chemical Manufacturing Excellence
A proactive EHS plan is not an option, an add-on, or a ‘nice-to have’ feature in the chemical manufacturing industry – it is the foundation on which your business stands.
From increased restrictions in the Toxic Substances and Control Act (TSCA) in the U.S. and the Registration, Evaluation, and Authorization of Chemicals (REACH) in Europe, to growing penalties related to environmental protection in China, chemical companies are experiencing tighter regulations across the globe.
Mitigating risk has become a vital strategic challenge for the chemical industry, whether it’s risk to employee safety, risk to the environment, risk of plant shutdown or risk of incurring fines.
Being proactive about implementing a thorough environmental health and safety (EHS) plan is important to today’s chemical companies. In the article “Mitigating Risk Through the Strategic Implementation of EHS Principles: A Regulatory Road Map,” Elsevier R&D Solutions suggests that such a plan should cover these main elements:
- Pollution prevention
- Waste reduction
- Clean production programs
- A chemical accident prevention program
The plan also needs to outline the roles and responsibilities of the company, its employees and for the actual EHS personnel.
Given constant changes in manufacturing and its technologies, the nature of compliance is always changing – and an EHS program can keep a business ahead of the curve. Being ready for challenges before they happen sets a company up for success.
A chemical company’s approach to EHS should be an integral part of the business, just as vital as any other core operating procedure.
